How these German flashcards work

Pick a deck and you get one German word at a time. Type the English translation, and if the word is a noun, choose whether it is der, die or das. Both halves have to be right for the card to count.

That second half is the point. Most flashcard apps let you learn Tisch = table and call it done, which leaves you guessing the article every time you actually build a sentence. Here the article is stripped from the word on screen, so the card cannot give the gender away.

The three piles

A card needs three correct answers to reach Strong, and a single wrong answer sends it back to Weak. Cards you have already seen drop out of the main deck, so you are never re-shown a word you just answered until you deliberately open that pile.

Using your own vocabulary list

If you are taking a class you probably have your own word list, and drilling someone else's deck is a poor substitute. Upload a CSV or TSV with three columns — German, English, and the noun gender — and it becomes a deck like any other, with its own saved progress.

Spelling is checked leniently: capitalisation is ignored, hyphens and punctuation are forgiven, and a single-letter typo still counts as correct on longer words. Getting an answer marked wrong over a missing hyphen teaches you nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Are these German flashcards free?

Yes, all of them, with no account and no signup. Nothing is held back behind a paywall.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Progress is saved in your browser on the device you are using. There is a Save Progress button that downloads a small file if you want to move your progress to another device.

Why do I have to choose der, die or das?

Because German nouns are close to useless without the article. Learning the gender at the same time as the word is far easier than trying to bolt it on later.

Can I use my own vocabulary list?

Yes — upload a CSV or TSV with German, English and gender columns. You can keep several decks side by side and switch between them, each with separate progress.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. It is a single web page with no app to install, and it keeps working offline once loaded.
